On July 11, 1302, one of the most remarkable battles in medieval European history took place near the city of Kortrijk, in the region of Flanders, now part of modern-day Belgium. Known as the Battle of the Golden Spurs, this unexpected victory forever changed military history.

At the time, the Kingdom of France sent thousands of heavily armored knights to crush a rebellion in Flanders. Most people believed the French cavalry, considered the strongest military force of the era, would win with ease. Instead, history took a surprising turn.

The Flemish army, made up largely of merchants, craftsmen, and ordinary townspeople, fought on foot. Using long pikes, disciplined formations, and the muddy terrain to their advantage, they successfully stopped the French cavalry charge. The result was one of the greatest defeats ever suffered by medieval knights.

The battle earned its name because hundreds of golden spurs were collected from the fallen French knights after the fighting. These spurs became a powerful symbol of the Flemish victory and determination.

Although the conflict between France and Flanders continued afterward, the Battle of the Golden Spurs proved that a well-organized infantry force could defeat heavily armored cavalry. Military historians often regard it as a turning point in European warfare, influencing battlefield tactics for centuries.

Today, July 11 is celebrated as Flemish Community Day in Belgium. While the battle has become an important symbol of Flemish identity, modern historians also emphasize that it was not simply a war between two nations, but a complex political and feudal conflict that later gained cultural significance.
