Chand Baori: India’s Mysterious Underground Stairwell

In the small village of Abhaneri, Rajasthan, India, stands an ancient structure that looks almost like a giant maze: Chand Baori.

Built around the 9th century, this remarkable structure was more than just a place to collect water. It was designed to store water while also providing a cooler environment for people during Rajasthan’s intense heat.

What makes Chand Baori truly fascinating is its incredible design. It has around 3,500 narrow steps arranged in a remarkably symmetrical pattern, descending deep into the well. From above, the geometric structure looks almost like a giant upside-down pyramid.

Chand Baori was not only a water source. It also served as a gathering place for local communities and was associated with royalty. Today, it remains an impressive example of how ancient Indian builders combined practical engineering, climate adaptation, and beautiful architecture in one extraordinary structure.
