Imagine a place where the loud honking of cars is replaced by the gentle splashing of water and the chirping of birds. Welcome to Giethoorn, a fairy-tale village in the Dutch province of Overijssel. This stunning destination recently went viral across global social media because it has absolutely no roads for cars.

Why Giethoorn is World-Famous

Often called the "Venice of the Netherlands," Giethoorn relies entirely on a network of narrow water canals. Here are three quick facts that make this village so unique:

  • Whisper Boats: Locals and tourists move around using traditional boats or electric boats equipped with silent motors to keep the peace.
  • Wooden Bridges: The village features over 170 beautiful wooden bridges that connect private houses to the main paths.
  • Walking and Cycling Paths: There are only narrow paths next to the canals, strictly reserved for pedestrians and bicycles.

A Quick History

The village was founded in 1230 by peat miners. As they dug out peat over centuries, large ditches were formed. These ditches eventually filled with water, creating the iconic canals we see today. Most houses in the village are historic, 18th-century cottages with beautiful thatched roofs.

Giethoorn remains one of the most peaceful and viral travel phenomena in the Netherlands.
