The Union of Romania (1918): The Birth of Modern Romania

One of the most important events in Romanian history was the Great Union of 1918, a moment that led to the creation of modern Romania. Following the end of World War I, several regions with large Romanian populations chose to unite with the Kingdom of Romania.
The most significant event took place on December 1, 1918, when representatives from Transylvania gathered in the city of Alba Iulia and declared their union with Romania. Similar decisions had already been made in Bessarabia and Bukovina earlier that year.
The Great Union dramatically expanded Romania's territory and population, bringing together millions of ethnic Romanians under a single state. As a result, the country entered a new era of national unity and development.
For Romanians, the union symbolized the fulfillment of a long-held dream of national self-determination. Although the years that followed brought political and economic challenges, the event remains a cornerstone of Romanian national identity.
Today, December 1 is celebrated as Romania's National Day, honoring the historic achievement that shaped the modern nation. The Great Union of 1918 continues to be remembered as one of the proudest moments in Romania's history.
