The Salt March: A Peaceful Protest That Changed India

One of the most significant events in Indian history was the Salt March of 1930, led by Mahatma Gandhi. The movement became a powerful symbol of India's struggle for independence from British rule.

At the time, the British government imposed a tax on salt, a basic necessity used by millions of Indians. To protest this unfair law, Gandhi and his followers embarked on a 390-kilometer journey from Sabarmati Ashram to the coastal village of Dandi.

After 24 days of walking, Gandhi reached the Arabian Sea and symbolically produced salt from seawater, openly defying British regulations. The act inspired millions of Indians to join the civil disobedience movement.

Although the march did not immediately end British rule, it attracted global attention and strengthened India's independence movement. It also demonstrated the power of nonviolent resistance in the face of oppression.

Today, the Salt March is remembered as one of the most influential peaceful protests in history and a defining moment in India's journey toward independence.
